Coombe Hill – Dunsmore – Chequers – Beacon Hill – Ellesborough – Butlers Cross – Coombe Hill

Start Time: Sunday 12 May 2019. Meet at 09.45 am for 10.00 am start.

Start and Finish: Park at public car park near Coombe Hill monument. GR 851062. This can be reached from the B4010 Princess Risborough to Wendover road via Great Kimble and Ellesborough to Butlers Cross.  At Butlers Cross take the narrow road leading southwards and after about one mile turn sharp left and this leads to a car park.  Parking is free. This is a fairly short walk passing through woods and farmland in the early part, before moving on to the real highlights by walking around the edge of the Chequers Estate with good views of the Prime Minister’s country residence.  After passing through more woods we reach the delightful church at Ellesborough and finish on Coombe Hill, the highest viewpoint of the Chilterns, which has outstanding views all round.

This is also the annual sponsored walk in association with Diabetes UK Aylesbury & District Branch. 

Difficulty: Moderate – 6 miles, with one steep climb up Coombe Hill.

Waypoints: Start : from GR 851062 from the car park walk towards the road and turn left at the signpost into the woods passing the National Trust “Low Scrubs” sign. Follow FP to Dunsmore Old Farm and on to GR859050. Through Goodmerhill Wood on the South Bucks Way to GR 846049 passing Chequers and along the margin of Maple Wood and onto Whorley Wood followed by Beacon Hill to the church at Ellesborough GR 836067. Follow the Aylesbury Ring in the direction of Butlers Cross to GR 846075. Turn right and walk up the field and across the golf course. Follow the left fork signposted Coombe Hill. The climb is steep and the summit is 260 metres (852ft) –  Finish.

Getting there from Aylesbury – (Approx 4.9 miles): Follow road A413 to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, follow the B4443 onto Mandeville Road. Follow the Risborough Road A4010. Take Nash Lee Road B4009. Turn right onto Chalkshire Road, and turn left onto Missenden Road. See notes above for directions to car park.

 Getting There from Oxford : (Approx 26.6 miles): Take A40 in the direction of Thame and then A418 signposted Aylesbury onto A4129 signed for Princess Risborough.  Follow A4129 onto Lower Icknield Way B4009. Continue onto Grove Lane, turn right onto Aylesbury Road/ Station Road A4010.  Slight left towards Ellesborough Road, then turn right onto Missenden Road. See notes above for directions to car park.
