Southend – Turville – Fingest – Frieth – Skirmett – Southend

Start Time: Sunday 12th February 2023. Meet at 09.45 am for 10.00 am start.

Start and Finish: The Hamlet of Southend, approx. five miles north of Henley-on-Thames. Park by the side of the Green – postcode is RG9 6JP (parking is free).   This is a ramble through some picturesque villages and beautiful scenery in the Chilterns with spectacular, wide-ranging views and quiet, peaceful woodland with abundant wildlife. There are a couple of steep climbs on the walk, which – although challenging – reward with magnificent views across the Hambleden Valley.

Difficulty: Moderate – 9.5 miles. A shorter walk  of 5 miles is available – park at the Yew Tree PH at Frieth, postcode RG9 6PG. There is ample street parking in the village. Parking is free. Please contact Walk Leader for further details.

Waypoints: Start : from Southend take Chiltern Way towards Turville  – from Turville follow rising track with Turville Hill & windmill on left to country lane – cross lane & bear right down hill following Chiltern Way to Fingest – heading out of Fingest take footpath on right and climb hill to wood –  exit wood and continue ahead to signed junction in front to brick wall – follow path through Mousells Wood – continue through wood and descend, passing new houses to  left turn into country lane – continue to centre of Frieth opposite church – cross road onto footpath directly opposite – at double set of kissing gates follow field boundary to left turn into country lane – at footpath sign turn right and follow path into woods – at bottom of hill  road and turn left into Skirmett – after phone box follow road to right over footbridge and take footpath on right up steep narrow path – follow green arrow on tree and continue straight on to edge of wood – take track to right and turn left onto clearly defined path – enter wood by set of gas pipes on left – exit wood into country lane – at bend turn left onto bridleway and continue straight ahead –  at marker post with open fields ahead turn right and climb hill – after stile follow left hand side of field  – exit field in far left-hand corner and continue on gravel path to country lane – turn right onto lane and then right onto concrete lane at Southend –  Finish.

 

Getting there from Aylesbury – (Approx 22 miles): A41 to junction with A413, then take A4010 to West Wycombe. From there take A40 for approx. 2 miles, then turn left onto Chipps Hill. Continue onto Bolter End Lane and turn right at Marlow Rd B482 then immediately left onto Fingest Lane. After 1.7 miles turn right, then left onto Dolesden Lane, and in less than 2 miles turn left onto Drovers Lane. After a further mile turn left onto the Green at Southend.

 Getting There from Oxford : (Approx 23 miles): Take A40/M40 to Junction 5 (Stokenchurch) and turn right onto Ibstone Road. Follow Ibstone Road/Oxford Road for approx. 2 miles. After a further 2 miles turn left onto Dolesden Lane, and in less than 2 miles turn left onto Drovers Lane. After a further mile turn left onto the Green at Southend.
